COMMUNITY
BASED MENTORING
|
What is Community Based Mentoring? |
|
Volunteers provide
a one-to-one mentoring relationship with a child who is between the
ages of 6 and 14. Matches typically meet for 4 hours a month. These
matches are contacted on a monthly basis for support by the agency
Match Support Specialist. |
|
|
|
What is the commitment? |
|
Because
consistency is so important in the lives of children, volunteers are
asked to spend a minimum of 4 hours a month with a child. Big
Brothers Big Sisters asks for at least a 1 year commitment. |
|
 |
|
What are the requirements? |
|
Volunteers are mature,
stable, responsible individuals 16 years and older. They must
complete an application, participate in an office interview, provide
the agency with copies of their driver’s license and auto insurance
card, and submit names of references. All volunteers must also
be fingerprinted (fee will be paid by applicant). When the
potential volunteer has successfully passed the screening process a
one-on-one match with a child will be made based on preferences and
compatibility. |

SCHOOL BASED
MENTORING
|
 |
What is School Based Mentoring?
Through a partnership between several local schools in our service
area, volunteers are now able to visit with children for one hour each
week in the schools. A Big Brothers Big Sisters staff member is
present during the meetings to offer guidance and support. |
|
What is the commitment?
Volunteers
meet with the same child for one hour each week for the duration of
the school year. They do not meet outside of school grounds.
Depending on which school is chosen, volunteers may meet during the
child's study hall, lunch hour, or after school.
|
|
What are the requirements?
Volunteers
complete an application form, provide references, and must pass a
background check. They are then interviewed and may begin
meeting with the child once approved. Both adult community
members and high school students are able to be matched in this
program.
